Somewhere along the way, we were taught that care comes in bottles. That if we’re coughing, run down, bloated, or our immune system feels “off”, the answer must be bought preferably from a pharmacy shelf with the right claims printed on the label. But most everyday remedies were never meant to be purchased. They were meant to be made.
This isn’t about rejecting modern medicine. Antibiotics, emergency care, diagnostics, these are essential and life saving when needed. This is about the remedy side of health. The everyday support that doesn’t actually require spending money.
Why Natural Remedies Aren’t “Unproven” Just Unprofitable
Clinical trials are expensive. Extremely expensive.
And natural remedies like garlic, honey, ginger, fruit, and herbs can’t be patented.
That means there’s no financial incentive to fund large human trials not because these remedies don’t work, but because no one profits from proving they do.
What we do have is:
centuries of traditional use known biological properties (antimicrobial, soothing, anti inflammatory) lived experience passed down quietly through families
Modern science often agrees at a mechanism level, even if it stops short of pharmaceutical style trials.
So when people say “there’s no evidence,” what they usually mean is:
There’s no expensive, profit driven study attached.
Those are very different things.
Remedy vs Medicine (This Matters)
Natural remedies do not replace medical treatment.
They are not antibiotics. They are not emergency care.
What they do replace is:
store bought cough syrups probiotic drinks immune tonics overpriced wellness shots
They support the body gently, cheaply, and intuitively especially for everyday needs.
And they bring care back into the home.
How Pantry Staples Support Immunity
When you strip things back, many traditional remedies begin with a few simple pantry staples, garlic, raw honey, and ginger. Not because they’re trendy, but because of what they naturally contain.
Garlic is rich in sulfur compounds such as allicin, which has been widely studied for its antimicrobial, antiviral, and immune supporting properties. It also provides small amounts of vitamin C, vitamin B6, manganese, and selenium, all of which play roles in immune function.
Ginger contains bioactive compounds like gingerol and shogaol, known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, while also supporting circulation and digestion, both important for overall immune resilience.
Raw honey offers natural antibacterial properties, trace enzymes, antioxidants, and small amounts of minerals such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium, while also soothing and coating the throat.
These ingredients don’t work in isolation. Around 70–80% of the immune system is connected to the gut, where beneficial bacteria help regulate immune responses.
Fermented foods and natural probiotics support this balance by nourishing the microbiome rather than overwhelming it. That’s where remedies like fermented garlic honey fit so naturally combining nutrient dense ingredients with gentle fermentation to support both digestion and immunity, using what’s already in the pantry. Here’s the recipe:

Fermented Garlic Honey 🍯🧄
Ingredients
Equipment
Method
- Peel garlic cloves and lightly crush or slice each one in half.
- Slice ginger root with the skin on.
- Place garlic, ginger, and cloves inside a clean mason jar.
- Pour raw honey over until fully submerged and stir to release air bubbles.
- Place lid on loosely and store in a cool dark place. It will be ready in about 1 week and will continue to ferment and deepen with time.
Notes
- Stir or turn daily for the first week.
- Bubbles are normal.
- After 3–4 weeks the honey thins and garlic mellows.
- If stored correctly it can keep for up to one year.
- To top up simply add more fresh raw honey, garlic, ginger, cloves, and any immune supporting herbs you prefer such as oregano and thyme.
- 1 teaspoon daily for immune support
- 3 teaspoons daily for coughs and viruses
- Stir into warm (not hot) water as a tea
- Use in dressings or marinades

The Part No One Talks About
Making your own remedies slows you down, it engages care, it builds trust with your body and with the foods you’re handling. It tells your nervous system: I’m safe enough to tend to myself and that matters more than most people realise. This isn’t anti medicine by any means as it has its place. This is pro discernment and a way for us to go back to our roots, do something good for our mind and body and help us connect with our foods and the earth as life intended.

Hey daughter in law. I’m loving this post. This is exactly how I raised my children with natural remedies and how we still live today. Good to see you doing this. Hope everything is good up there.
Yay I’m so glad! I love this kind of stuff! I wish we had chickens like you do as well! One day.
