What Is Naturally Fermented Pineapple Soda?
Naturally fermented pineapple soda is made using fresh pineapple and a ginger bug starter. The natural bacteria and wild yeast from the ginger bug ferment the sugars, creating gentle carbonation and a slightly tangy flavour.
Unlike store bought pineapple soda, homemade versions are:
- Made with real fruit
- Naturally carbonated
- Free from preservatives
- Less sweet and more refreshing
- Naturally fermented
The result is a light, tropical drink that feels both refreshing and nourishing.
What Is a Ginger Bug?

Try Different Fruits and Flavours
One of the best things about making naturally fermented soda with a ginger bug is how easy it is to experiment with different fruits. Once you understand the basic method, you can swap pineapple for almost any fruit or even fruit scraps.
This makes it a beautiful way to use seasonal produce, reduce waste, and create unique homemade drinks.
Here are a few fruits that work especially well:
Feijoa Soda
Feijoas make a beautiful naturally fermented soda with a soft, floral sweetness and gentle tang. You can use either the flesh or the skins, making this a great option during feijoa season when you may have plenty on hand.
Feijoa soda is:
- Light and refreshing
- Slightly floral and aromatic
- Perfect for seasonal fermenting
If using feijoa skins, simply add them to your fermentation liquid just as you would with pineapple.
Other Fruits That Work Well
You can also try:
- Apple or apple skins
- Pears
- Mango
- Berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)
- Peach or nectarine
- Citrus (lemon, lime, orange peel and juice)
- Grapes
Fruit skins often work particularly well because they contain natural oils and flavour.
A Simple Guideline
When experimenting with fruit sodas:
- Use ripe fruit for best flavour
- Avoid mouldy or spoiled fruit
- Leave room in bottles for carbonation
- Always burp bottles regularly
Once you start experimenting, it becomes easy to create your own seasonal homemade sodas using whatever fruit you have available.
